It has been mandatory since 1997 to have a Motorway Vignette (a type of road tax sticker) when driving on Austrian motorways. This applies to tourist and business traffic. Trailers/Caravans up to 3,500 kg do not require a vignette.The Motorway Vignette can be obtained at all motorway transition points in Austria as well as at other places.

Drivers no longer require dipped headlights in Austria during the day as from 1 January 2008.Research has shown that other road users are quickly missed due to having your dipped headlights on. When visibility is poor, headlights must, of course, be used.
