It has been mandatory since 1997 to have a Motorway Vignette (a type of road tax sticker) when driving on Austrian motorways. This applies to tourist and business traffic. Trailers/Caravans up to 3,500 kg do not require a vignette.

The Motorway Vignette can be obtained at all motorway transition points in Austria as well as at other places.

Prices: Motorway Vignette for Austria (2010)
• Car: 10 days for Austria € 7.90
• Car: 2 months for Austria € 22.90
• Car: annual vignette for Austria € 76.20

It applies to all winter sports countries that not driving with snow tyres may lead to being deemed (co-)liable for accidents because a driver using normal tyres cannot respond as well to unexpected situations. More info on snow tyres.

Drivers no longer require dipped headlights in Austria during the day as from 1 January 2008.
Research has shown that other road users are quickly missed due to having your dipped headlights on. When visibility is poor, headlights must, of course, be used.

Exceeding the speed limit on specific motorways, the matrix signs state IG-L (Immissionsschutzgesetz-Luft) in Austria is regarded as a environmental crime. You should take into account fines are higher than normal.
